MARTINI RACING should be familiar to most car enthusiasts.
The Martini Racing Team refers to the various racing teams sponsored by the Italian company Martini & Rossi, a Turin-based distillery best known for producing Martini vermouth.
Martini’s motorsport sponsorship began in 1958 under the name Martini International Club, founded by Count Metello Rossi di Montelera of the Martini & Rossi family.
Most Martini racing cars featured a white or silver base color adorned with the iconic dark blue, light blue, and red stripes, although some vehicles appeared in red or darker tones.
MARTINI PORSCHE
This time, I customized an old Volkswagen Beetle, turning it into a modified racer. Alongside it is another Martini-themed machine — the legendary MARTINI PORSCHE.
The Beetle’s engine has been upgraded to a reinforced flat-four (B4), fitted with a roll cage, a modified rear engine lid, and a large rear wing. The front windshield has been replaced with a racing-style mesh guard.
Both wheels and tires were swapped — the wheels are from a Pagani, but since the rubber tires were too loose, I replaced them with 3D-printed ones. Because the new wheels are larger and wider, both the front and rear suspensions were reworked.
The Pagani wheel design has a fairly open structure, so I figured — since I’m already modifying it, why not add wheel covers? That’s why there are two different style variations in the photos.
The chrome bumpers were stripped and refinished in a dark color, giving the car a slightly more aggressive attitude, instead of the cute, friendly look it originally had.
The biggest headache came from the chrome side trims and the rubber fender seals. The side trims were repainted in gunmetal black — they were supposed to be silver, but on a white body the silver lines barely showed.
The fender seals were even trickier — I had to redo, repaint, and reshape them several times. The engine was also heavily modified, though the ignition leads still seem a bit too thick...
The Martini brand rose to fame in the 1970 World Sportscar Championship, when Hans-Dieter Dechent’s team competed under the name International Martini Racing Team. They ran several Porsche 908/02 chassis, but the cars didn’t yet wear the now-famous striped livery — that came later, from 1971 onward, when the Martini Porsche look became iconic.
This time, I built a Porsche GT3 RS in Martini Racing livery — something I’d been wanting to do for a very, very long time. I had been missing the correct water-slide decals, but thanks to a friend’s tip, I found out Tamiya had just released a new GT3 Porsche kit, and that finally made the dream possible.
For those with a sharp eye, you might notice I added a few extra details to this model — starting from the front:
-
Front air intakes: originally solid pieces; I cut them open and added mesh grilles, with cooling plates behind them.
-
Front hood vents: also originally closed; I replaced them with custom 3D-printed mesh inserts. Beneath those are the radiator air channels, which I also scratch-built (though they’re hard to spot).
-
B-pillars: the kit didn’t include them — many builders add seatbelts that just stick to the side, but I wanted the structure accurate. I photographed and measured the correct angles, then 3D-printed the B-pillars.
-
Seatbelts and buckles: these details don’t stand out much in photos, so I’ve included shots taken before the body was fully assembled.
